At Westminster, we like to give families the opportunity to worship together and also give children a substantial program while their parents take in the sermon. For about the first half of the service, children sit with their parents until they are dismissed during the offering. One parent or caregiver accompanies the children during this interlude to sign them in at their classes.
After a warm-up activity or some play time, the children have a snack of milk and cookies in their own classroom spaces. Next, the lesson is taught and reinforced by a follow-up activity in a workbook which they complete over the course of the year. At some point during the class, children have the opportunity to recite the memory verse they have been learning that week. For every ten verses (five for kindergartners), they receive a small prize. At the end of the service, children need to be signed-out at their classrooms by a parent or caregiver. A take-home paper is given out with suggestions for reviewing the lesson during the week.
